For which indications for use should I consider non-invasive VNS?

In practice, treating conditions such as headaches, psychological disorders, sleep disorders, gastrointestinal conditions etc., may have several challenges.

In recent years, an age-old treatment has been reinvented as a modern day non-invasive treatment option that has minimal or no significant side-effects: Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (tcVNS).

tcVNS device has been approved (Yuan and Silberstein, 2016b) for acute and prophylactic treatment or adjunctive use:

  • primary headaches (cluster headache, migraine, hemicrania continua)
  • medication overuse headache (in adults)
  • reactive airway conditions (asthma, exercise-induced bronchospasm, COPD)
  • epilepsy
  • panic disorder / anxiety
  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • major depressive disorder
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • gastric disorders
  • irritable bowel syndrome

While more research is needed to fully understand its potential benefits, early results are promising and suggest that it may be a valuable tool for treating a variety of disorders such as:

  • insomnia
  • inflammation
  • stroke (immediate / post rehab)
  • cognitive impairment
  • tinnitus
  • COVID-19
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • autism
  • bipolar disorder
  • alzheimer’s disease
  • obesity
  • impaired glucose tolerance
  • gastroparesis
  • asthma
  • fibromyalgia
  • traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • concussion
  • homeostasis
  • cerebellar tremor
  • involuntary movement disorders
