How does VNS help with tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of actual external sound and it affects 10–15% of the general population. Chronic tinnitus is linked to a dysfunction in the auditory system that may result in abnormal neuronal behavior.

The effect of tNVS on the auditory cortical response suggests that the auditory system can be accessed and modulated via stimulation of the vagus nerve.

Continual tVNS stimulation paired with tailored sound therapy has been documented to remove an individual’s tinnitus, improve mood, and decrease the severity of tinnitus (Yap et al., 2020)
