# Is non-invasive VNS as effective as invasive VNS? 

Several studies have illustrated that transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) can elicit therapeutic effects that are similar to those produced by its invasive counterpart, vagus nerve stimulation ([Yap et al., 2020](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2020.00284/full)).

nVNS devices could be expected to provide an improved safety profile because they do not require surgical implantation and provide shorter durations of stimulation compared with the constantly cycling stimulation with implantable VNS. ([Ben-Menachema et al., 2015](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25614179/)).
